Handsome nude drawing by Joe Waano Gano, an important Native American artist with a prestigious career in California in the 1930s and 1940s. Boldly drawn with pencil on a square of tracing paper, it has a strong outline and bold shadows that suggest the art and cinema of the era. Born a Cherokee Indian (his name means "Bow-Arrow"), the artist studied with Christian von Schneideau in the 1920s before exhibiting widely in the 1930s and 1940s. Waano-Gano won a series of medals and prizes, painted murals in the Los Angeles General Hospital, and promoted the native art of the American Indian.
