There is No Easy Way from the Earth to the Stars

This is an enigmatic medal with a dark, nocturnal feeling. It depicts a tangled mass of winged horse and nude male and female figures reaching skyward on one side, and a barren monadnock on the other, with the curious text, "There is No Easy Way from the Earth to the Stars." The sculptor was Gaetano Cecere, who executed one of the earliest issues of the Society of Medalists in 1933. Cecere exhibited widely over several decades -- participating in shows at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, for example, for over 22 years -- and sculpted many large-scale works for public war memorials and for Brookgreen Gardens.
