In an era when many French and German sculptors depicted powerful men straining to accomplish great tasks -- such as pushing a boulder uphill or stretching an enormous bow -- this circa-1925 bronze by Fritz Rosenberg stands out. First, its unusual six-sided base gives the composition great energy, as man and beast reach out from the corner into the larger world. Rosenberg has also composed the straining figure in a way that provides an anatomical survey of every major muscle in the torso, arms and legs. The original marble base is beautifully detailed as well.
