Wheeler Williams, one of America's finest and most prolific sculptors in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, established a considerable reputation for his public monuments and garden sculpture, not to mention his work for the Works Progress Administration. He created many fine works in bronze and stone, but this example in porcelain is very unusual and rare. It celebrates two Greek gods -- Zephyrus and Flora -- who were lovers, the warm westerly wind of Zephyrus bringing life and nourishment to the flowers and plant life represented by Flora. This piece is dated 1943.
