Painted in an era when African or African American figures were increasingly featured in painting and sculpture, both in America and Europe, this sensuous depiction of a black male figure by Rowena Meeks Abdy shows the virtuoisic use of watercolor and gouache. Abdy explores the full range of purples, browns, yellows and red tones in the lustrous surface of her subject. Surrounding this figure in a halo of white makes the entire figure seem electrically alive. Abdy won medals and prizes in the 1920s and 1930s and her works were collected by the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco and the Seattle Art Museum.
