This especially sensuous drypoint etching by Donald DeLue of a female nude, almost Mannerest in its depiction of long, sinuous legs and arms, is a rare find! Created early in De Lue's career (1933-34) when he worked in the New York studio of Bryant Baker, the Enchantress was one of a series of langurous and erotic etchings De Lue made in an effort to generate additional income before he was a well-established sculptor. He finished about a dozen pieces, but because they were not a commercial success, only a small number of each was printed. Although his early mastery of the human anatomy is already demonstrated in this etching, the figure does not have the heavy, exaggerated musculature that was common in his later work. His male and female sculpted figures only five years later at the federal courthouse in Philadelphia, for example, have enormous strength and severe weightiness.
