Profile of Robert Lohman (1919-2001)
Robert Lohman, one of the Midwest's finest and most prolific 20th century artists, began his career by working with renowned sculptor Carl Milles at the Cranbrook Academy in suburban Detroit. In the late 1940s, he became Director of Fine Arts for Cranbrook.
Lohman worked for much of his life in Indiana, creating a prolific stream of paintings, and sculptures in bronze, terra cotta, ceramic and plaster. He created important medals in the 1960s for the Indy 500 Pacemaker Club, and to represent America at an international exposition in Athens.
Lohman was particularly interested in the human figure, and depicted male and female nudes many times in bronze, ceramic and paint over several decades' time.
