This beautiful and finely-modeled portrait of of an Edwardian-era man depicts him with a strong stare, sculpted hairline and firm mouth, executed in black and white pencils by S. Marshall Franz, one of the nation's leading magazine illustrators. After immigrating from Russia, Franz (who later spelled his name "Frantz") studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts), and later became a proflific illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar and other publications. This piece is dated "1913."
