This striking portrayal of a young man with a handome mane of jet-black hair was drawn by Henry Mattson, the Swedish-born painter who became a part of the Woodstock school of artists starting in 1916. Lewis Mumford, the famed art and architecture critic, wrote of Mattson in 1934: His "emotions are primary, inward, self-sustained, and every aspect of his paintings is pervaded by them."
