This enigmatic and forceful drawing has a story to tell: it depicts a young, doe-eyed man with his hands tied by a tangle of rope, nude but for a bit of drapery over one shoulder, who looks poignantly at the viewer. The artist, Rudolf Scheffler, was widely known for his murals and other public art, so this piece may have been a prepartory drawing for a larger historical or allegorical painting. Scheffler participated in the Works Progress Administration after immigrating to America from Germany, and his works can be found in government buildings and churches in Michigan, Illinois, New York, Louisiana and California, among other states.
