This characteristically beautiful pencil drawing, finely detailed, of a half-nude male figure is by John Lear, well-known for his preoccupation with finely-proportioned figures, many in surreal settings. This figure is shown gazing at the viewer, with one arm raised and resting on the branch of a tree. The surrealism that Lear favored is especially evident in the figure's garb: above the waist he is nude; his lower body from the waist to the lower thigh is wrapped in a complex, overlapping spiral of ribbons or strips of cloth -- a favorite device of Lear's.
