A rare and very handsome medal designed by one of America's finest figural sculptors, the Vail medal was issued by American Telephone and Telegraph in 1922 to honor Theodore Vail, its first president. The obverse side shows a bust of Vail, while the reverse depicts a seated female figure flanked by two statuesque nude males, all holding telephone wires. A 1922 publication called this medal "one of the most noteworthy and important industrial issuances of medals that has taken place in recent years." Weinman was associated with America's two foremost sculptors of the early 20th century: he studied with Augustus Saint Gaudens and was assistant to Daniel Chester French. He designed countless public sculptures across America, and also sculpted bas reliefs for the "Liberty" half dollar and "Mercury" dime for the U.S. Mint.
