Designed by one of America's greatest 20th century figural sculptors, this set of two bronze and silver medals all depict Robert E. Lee on one side, and battling nude figures on horseback -- representing brothers, North pitted against South -- on the reverse. Commissioned by the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at New York University in 1963, the medals feature very high relief and bold, muscular forms that were characteristic of DeLue's work from his earliest days sculpting super-human figures for govenment buildings during the Depression. The largest medal -- 3 inches in diameter -- is in bronze. The smaller medal, in silver, is 1.75" in diameter.
