In the midst of the Second World War when America's fighting men and working men were admired by artists of every description, Mahonri Young made a reputation for strong, energized images of men in industry and labor. Finished in a black, satiny patina, one side of this medal shows two men riding an I-beam on a construction site, and the other side depicts three strong men riveting an upright beam into place. This piece was issued in 1943 and was the 30th issue of the Society of Medalists. Young studied in Paris and later designed sculpture for the Anglican Cathedral there; his work is in the collection of Brigham Young University in Utah, and he contributed an article on "Modeling" to the Encyclopedia Britannica.
