This handsome, stylized medallion has the incised look of bas reliefs cut into countless Art Deco and Moderne government buildings of the 1930s and 1940s. The sculptor was Sidney Waugh, and his subject is somewhat eccentric: the preferability of privacy and anonymity over infamy and sin. Waugh is probably best known for his designs in etched glass for Steuben and other companies. He also perfected a unique style for his bas relief sculptures with several hallmarks, including a deeply incised outline around his subjects, and a strongly stylized approach -- what we would term an "Art Deco" look -- to the human figure. This piece was the 34th issue of the Society of Medalists in 1946.
