This portrait in pastel represents the confluence of two important artists: C. Katherine Nelson, painter and designer, and her onetime student, Glidden Parker, who became one of America's most innovative and influential ceramic artists. Nelson, who studied with Hans Hoffman and was a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, later created decorative designs for the Glidden Pottery, located just a block from the campus of Alfred University, where she taught. This moody, melancholic portrait, drawn in the 1940s as Parker's career and business were prospering, is a fascinating window into the world of art and artistry after the Second World War.
