Like many of his Russian emigre compatriots, Boris Solotareff settled in Paris between the wars, when it was a hotbed of artistic creativity and experimentation. This frieze-like group of figures shows the influence of mural painting and the emerging stylized art of the Moderne period. Solotareff used fresh, beautiful blues and flesh-toned watercolors for this piece, and depicts a nude male figure flanked by other figures in Classical costume.
