Exquisitely crafted by Bing and Grondahl in 1913, this blanc de chine porcelain figure by Kai Nielsen explored his facination with female figures that seem to be mothers to both humans and sealife. Here, she embraces her child at her breast, while a fish nuzzles her back from behind. A few years later, Nielsen sculpted a much larger version of this theme for the Water Garden of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek in Copenhagen.
