This horrifying depiction of close-at-hand, pitched battle, somehow both ennobled and more stark by presenting the soldiers nude, was sculpted by Anna von Koranyi, a Hungarian artist, not long after World War I ended. Densely packed with combatants using their rifles to club and stab each other, their nudeness emphasizes their strength, and also their vulnerability. They are sturdy and healthy, yet each of them is destined to destruction and death.
