"Archer Across New York" Clock
A magnificent combination of figural sculpture and streamlined, late Art Deco design, this wind-up clock is dominated by a large, 3 inch gold medallion featuring a nude male figure holding a winged shield, presented to an employee of the Port of New York Authority for thirty years of public service. Behind the figure is a dynamic scene of the New York port at work in 1957, complete with two flying airplanes, a number of ships plying the waters around Manhattan, and the rising Art Deco towers of the city. The sculptor of the medallion, John Amore, was born in Italy and trained in architecture and sculpture in France and the United States. He won prizes from the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects and the American Academy in Rome in the 1930s. Note: clock works need repair, and base of clock needs replating.
