Embracing Couple -- Hercules and ?
One of the most complex and sensuous of Dahl-Jensen's series of mythological and classical nude figural works, this piece depicts an exquisitely tender moment of affection and quiet conversation between a seated male figure and his female lover. Cupped between his knees, but coyly turning her face away, the female is coaxed in whispered tones by the male, who fingers the curls of her hair. Like all J. P. Dahl-Jensen's works, this piece is beautifully detailed down to every lock of hair and toe or finger, and the lines of the two nude figures are sinuous and sexy. Dahl-Jensen was renowned for his designs at the Bing & Grondahl porcelain works from 1897 to 1917 before he established his own company in 1925. He is best known for pieces with rich, polychromatic glazes, but his milky-white nudes are much more sculpturally complex -- and hard to find.
