Birth of Venus
Art Deco sculptural bas relief featuring stylized nude female with spouting fish and flying birds by Boris Blai. Created in 1956 from molded fiberglass patinated to imitate cast bronze. Blai was an important sculptor who studied in Kiev, St. Petersburg, Munich and Paris before settling in America in 1917. He cofounded and directed the Tyler School of Art, now part of Temple University, in 1935, and sculpted many realistic, stylized and experimental figural works over a career spanning several decades. This piece is reminiscent of architectural panels that were designed for monumental Art Deco and Moderne buildings of the 1940s and 1950s. Here's your chance to own a bit of streamlined American art history!
